Sissu is a small town in the Lahaul Valley of District Spiti Himachal Pradesh in India. It is situated on the right bank of river Chandra at a distance of 35.5 km from Manali on the road going from Manali to Spiti via Keylong. It is 3,200 meters (10,498 ft) above sea level. It is 15 km southeast of Koksar and 4.6 km from the Atal Tunnel. From Manali, when tourists go to visit Solang Valley, they go to visit this valley via Atal Tunnel, or while going to Spiti, they go to Spiti via Atal Tannal, Sissu Valley, Keylong, and on their way back they come after crossing Rohtang Pass via Kokhsar. Hence this place has a special significance in tourism.
Known as Khwaling, the importance of this place is also greater because it is located in a separate valley. The end of Kullu Manali Valley is till Solang and after that, the Atal Tunnel which is a 9 km long tunnel from the bottom of a very high Rohtang Pass mountain passes through the bottom of the mountain to enter another valley into Keylong Valley. This valley is different from Kullu Manali valley in many ways. You rarely get to see trees and plants around Sissu because this place remains covered with snow for more days than the year.
The panoramic view across the Chandra River and the beautiful waterfall in front of the city, locally known as 'Palden Lhamo Dhar', is particularly spectacular.
The nearby village is home to the famous deity of Lahaul who is also known as Bhagwan Ghepan or Ghepang and Lord Gyapang. That is why a high mountain is also named after this deity, which is known as Giaphang Goh.
This place also has a helipad that has been used to provide essential medical services to the Indian Army or to the local people before the Atal Tunnel was built, when the whole valley was cut off from the world due to heavy snowfall. Sisu is located just a few kilometers away from the north portal of Rohtang Tunnel, after the Rohtang Tunnel was built, this area is now connected to other cities throughout the year. Hence, it has now become a popular tourist destination.
There is also a nearby lake known as Sissu Lake which is a major tourist attraction.
Sisu is the main city center for the nearby villages of Ropsang, Khangsar, Shurthang, Gyungling, Gomathang, Jagdang, Sarkhang, Yangling, and Labrang.
There is also a Buddhist gompa located in Labrang village, called 'Labrang Gompa', which is dedicated to the 'Palden Lhamo' Lama Upaguru.
